Dieting is not a prison sentence.

Whether you're looking to lose weight, gain muscle, or simply live a healthier, more sustainable life, your diet is usually the biggest consideration and stressor.

The possibilities are endless and it can often be overwhelming trying to figure out which path to take. Are you going to low-carb route or the fasting route? Do you count calories and macronutrients or not? Can I get a cheat sheet or not? Should I try the Mediterranean diet or the keto diet?

The stress is understandable and the misinformation is endless… But there is a good answer to that!

What choice should or can I make when starting a diet?

That answer?

Choose the diet you stick to and enjoy the most. Simple.

Of course, some basic rules should not be ignored. There are clear decisions that classify whether you eat healthy or not - we all know this. Fruits and vegetables are generally good, while processed foods like crackers and cookies are generally bad.

The distinction here is moderation, commitment, discipline, but most importantly - enjoyment. As long as you can stick to a relatively healthy diet (i.e. the 80/20 rule), your only decision left is to figure out what works for you and stick to it.

There are many effective diets.

The real player is compliance and sustainability.

So, what kind of diet is best for you? The best diet is one that is backed by science, healthy, and easiest for the individual to adhere to. A diet that typically focuses on whole foods, plant-based options (yes, that can include animal proteins!) with the flexibility to be tailored to the individual is usually a good place to start.

Find what you like, make sure it generally fits within the parameters of a healthy lifestyle, and stick to it! A diet is just a broad framework of what you can and can’t eat. It’s not a prison sentence.

Finally, and to reiterate the premise: the diet that is best for you is the diet you stick to…
